La vivienda Emberá, conocida tradicionalmente como tambo, consiste en un armazón de madera de planta circular o rectangular, construida sobre pilotes a una altura de 1.50 o dos metros sobre el nivel del suelo, con techo cónico de hojas de palma. Se asciende por al que se le hacen muescas a manera de peldaños. La mayoría de las veces los tambos no tienen paredes exteriores ni divisiones internas, el piso se hace de estrellitas de palma, sobre una base de tierra se construye el fogón y a su alrededor se desarrollan actividades cotidianas, diurnas y nocturnas.
Se observa que cada vivienda está generalmente aislada, aun cuando en algunos casos se encuentran dos o tres tambos juntos, pertenecientes a miembros de la misma unidad doméstica. Están siempre localizados en la orilla de un río que sirve de vía de comunicación y lugar para actividades de aseo y recreación.
El mobiliario doméstico se compone fundamentalmente de cestos, muy variados en materiales, formas y tamaños según sus funciones: pequeños bancos, repisas y otros objetos de madera y palmas, cortezas de árbol moldeadas para almacenar productos de cosecha o para descansar en las noches.
La mayor parte de los productos del mobiliario son elaborados por ellos mismos a partir de materiales propios de la región que sirven para satisfacer necesidades básicas. A estos se agregan, desde hace ya varios años, algunos productos de producción industrial adquiridos en los centros de comercio local: ollas de aluminio, recipientes plásticos y de vidrio, pieza de tela para el vestido y adorno, máquinas para moler, herramientas de hierro y acero, como machetes, hachas y escopetas, linternas, radios o grabadoras, y, en la mayoría de los casos, motores fuera de borda.
El espacio bajo la vivienda se emplea como corral para los animales domésticos, aves y cerdos principalmente, los cuales, sólo en pocas ocasiones son consumidos por la misma comunidad, pues se destinan para la venta en los mercados vecinos, donde los Emberá adquieren, con el dinero así obtenido, las mercancías indispensables para su subsistencia como ingredientes de cocina: sal azúcar, aceite etc.
